Document Summary

5 characteristics of quality scientific research: based on measurements that are objective, valid and reliable, it can be generalized, uses techniques to reduce bias, it is made public, it can be replicated. Objectivity measurements: measure of an entity or behaviour that is consistent across the observers. Must have the same measurement regardless of who is measuring. Measurement must involve different situations and how participants respond. High tech equipment (i. e. functional magnetic resonance imaging) allows scientist to view brain and see which areas are activated during a particular actions. Biological variables relate to the behaviour and mental functions of a human. Technology allows us to understand the same variable through different measurements. Operational definitions: statements describing procedures and specific measures that are used for observations. Spatial reasoning: ability to look at objects and manipulate them mentally. Validity: the degree in which an instrument or procedure actually measures what it claims to measure.
