Document Summary
Hypnosis and meditation are ways of inducing what many regard as an altered state of consciousness. Injury/illness can result in temporary/permanent change to level of consciousness. Hypnosis: procedure of inducing a heightened state of suggestibility: hypnosis is not a trance, simply suggests changes. Hypnosis based on an interaction between (1) automatic (unconscious) thought and behaviours and (2) a supervisory system, sometimes referred to as executive processing. Dissociation theory: explains hypnosis as a unique state in which consciousness is divided into two parts: an observer and a hidden observer. Social cognitive theory: explains hypnosis by emphasizing the degree to which beliefs and expectations contribute to increased suggestibility. Research on hypnosis as a treatment for pain shows that response expectancy- whether the individual believes the treatment will work- play a large role in the actual pain relief experienced. Idea that expectations influence hypnotic responses implies that some form of executive processing is influencing the experiences of an individual.
