Document Summary

Mental illnesses were once perceived as devil possession/witch craft work. New approach called moral treatment patients treated with kindness and decency; still not effective as people with illness were imprisoned. Over half a million people were in mental institutions until chlorpromazine was introduced and people with schizophrenia and other diseases could function independently (jobs, family) large # of people were out of mental facilities though this increased homelessness. There were no cures very difficult to reintegrate people with disorders into families. Medical model sees psychological conditions as sets of symptoms, causes, and outcomes, with treatments aimed at changing physiological processes in order to alleviate symptoms. Very difficult as normal is different amongst varying cultures (homosexuality was once considered abnormal/disorder) Psychologists determine whether or not an individual is abnormal if the thoughts/feelings/behaviours of an individual are maladaptive and if: Whether it causes distress to oneself or others, impairs day to day functioning, increases the risk of harm to oneself or others.
