Memories are reconstructed each time we retrieve them. Much of the way we store memories depends on our tendency to remember the gist of things. Schema: organized clusters of memories that constitute one"s learning about events, objects, and ideas. When we encounter familiar events, schemas become active and they affect what we expect, pay attention to and remember. Self-schemas are based on past experiences and are used to encode self-relevant information: may serve additional role during development, ability to form plays a critical role in forming memories about our lives. Nervous system (including the brain) is still developing. Memories of our past is influenced by our motivations to see ourselves in particular ways. Memories are not stable, they change overtime. False memories: remembering events that didn"t occur, or incorrectly recalling details of an event. Memories can be influenced by minor factors.
