Document Summary
Long-standing, pervasive behavioural patterns that are not to the norms of cultural expectations & disrupt work and social life; may or may not cause cognitive distress. Extremes of traits that is coupled with inflexibility of traits rigid in behaviour & can"t change. Typically high test-re test reliability when testing for personality disorders because the abnormal patterns of behaviour are very stable (esp. for disorders like antisocial personality disorder) Difficult to diagnose because symptoms are very similar to other types of disorders and very heterogeneous. Suggestion that diagnostic systems should be more dimension i. e. personality disorders symptoms are an extreme of normal behaviour rather than categorical (e. g. this person shows x, x, y symptoms) Some researchers suggest personality disorder should be diagnosed when 1) individual can"t engage in prosocial behaviours, 2) form close relationships 3) develop a solid self-identity. Must be diagnosed by clinically trained professional because individuals are most likely unaware that they have a disorder.
