Motivation: a set of energetic forces that determine the direction, intensity and persistence of an employees work effort. Note that motivation is not one thing but instead, a set of district forces. They can be both internal and external to the employee. Motivation determines what employees do at a given moment- the direction in which their effort is channelled. Engagement: a widely used term in contemporary workplaces that mainly means motivation but can mean affective commitment as well. There are many theories that attempt to explain why some employees are more motivated (or engaged) than others. (1) the expectancy theory. Summary: describes the cognitive process that employees go through to make choices among different voluntary responses. Employee behaviour is directed towards pleasure and away from pain, towards some outcomes and away from others. The theory suggests that our choices depend on three speci c beliefs based in our past learning and experiences.
