Ability to receive input is dependent upon the listeners state of readiness, when receivers are turned on and tuned in. The received input must be notices as important; actively perceived. External and internal distraction often interfere with accurate perception and create filters which partially or completely block the pt. Once the input is perceived, the listener attaches meaning to it interpretation is made. Effective listening encompasses not only receiving sensory input, but also perceiving it and interpreting it. Effective listening, the active process of taking in, absorbing and eventually understanding what is being expressed, required energy and concentration on the part of the listener. Hearing without fully concentrating and attending is passive listening. Active listening is for the purpose of understanding.
