Political Science 3334E Chapter Notes - Chapter Berlin&Taylor: Negative Liberty, Positive Liberty, Autocracy
Document Summary
There are two kinds of freedom, negative and positive. Negative freedom is freedom from absence of interference: man is unobstructed from doing what he wants, not being able to do what you want is being unfree. Positive freedom is freedom to : derives from the wish on the part of the individual to be his own master. I wish my life and decisions to depend on myself not external forces. It is kind of justifiable at times to coerce men in the name of a same goal: they would pursue this goal if they were enlightened but do not because they are blinded. The destruction of bourgeois freedom is no real loss of freedom and coercion can be justified in the name of freedom. Some degree of exercise is necessary for man to be considered free: a pure opportunity concept is impossible.
