BU385 Chapter 4: Chapter 4S- Reliability
Document Summary
Defining reliability and stating two ways of using it. Reliability: measure of the ability of a product or part to perform its intended function under a prescribed set of conditions reliability is a probability. Reliability of a product/part used in 2 ways: Reliability when activated: focuses on one point in time and is use when product or part must operate for one time (e. g. air bag) Reliability for a given length of time: focuses on length of service (e. g. car) Reliability management involves establishing, achieving, and maintaining reliability objectives for products. Achieving reliability is responsibility of reliability engineers who use variety of techniques to build reliability into products, test performance, and estimate reliability. If reliability is inadequate, types of failure and effect on product should be determined, root cause(s) identified, and potential failure prevented. Reliability of a product is determined from the reliability of its parts.
