Excludability- the property of a good whereby a person can be prevented from using it. Rival in consumpion- the property of a good whereby one person"s use of it diminishes other people"s use. Under these 2 characterisics, they can be divided into 4 categories: Private goods- both excludable and rival in consumpion i. e. an ice cream can be eaten which prevents someone from using it and another person can"t eat the same cone. Public goods- neither excludable nor rival in consumpion i. e. naional defence. Common resources- rival in consumpion but not excludable i. e. ish in the ocean. Club goods- excludable but not rival in consumpion i. e. ire protecion in a town. The free- rider problem: people who receive the beneit of a good but avoid paying for it. Naional defence- once the country is defended it is impossible to exclude someone from the protecion. Basic research- general knowledge is a public good, i. e. a mathemaician can"t patent a theorem.
