Canadians are also living longer and this puts strain on the healthcare system. Inactivity is a very costly issue and increased physical activity will keep people healthier for longer. Physical inactivity is the 4th leading cause of death worldwide. There is the consistent question of why canadians remain inactive and how can we get them to become active. Intervention-based research discusses two distinct fields of research; determinant and intervention research. Determinant research examines the factors that affect exercise behaviours. Determinants are factors that predict exercise behaviour. Individuals generally exercise less frequently as they age. Psychological factors assess what the individual is thinking and what traits they might possess. Social factors involve aspects with social setting or human interactions. Social support is a strong predictor of exercise adherence for most individuals.
