During 80s, programmable and computer based methods of music making were widespread. Process of creating musical track/making beats was often completed independently from the vocalist or rapper before lyrics and melodies were constructed. While manner of creation at first seems to be antithesis of rock tradition, beat based production techniques became influential in many forms of hybrid rock in 90s. By end of decade, most rock musicians who performed live in studio with traditional instrumentation used daw that grew largely out of beat based recording movement. Rap grew into one of pop musics dominant styles in uk and us. Rap music champioed eclecticism with references to older music. Ability to combine disparate prerecorded pieces became even easier with growth of the sampler in late 80s. Samplers allowed beat makers to record small sections of cmmercial recordings and create repetitive loops. Sample sources often taken from sources not associated with hip hop culture like classical music and rock.
