Document Summary
Idea that hypnosis produces an altered state of consciousness or trance-like state is only one explanation. During hypnosis people can be directed to act in unusual ways or experience unusual sensations, remember or forget events. Hypnosis involves willing relinquishment of control over certain behaviours and acceptance of distortions of reality. In order to work, individuals must be open and responsive to suggestions made by hypnotist. Some people more open than others, often runs in families. 15% of adults very susceptible, 10% not at all hypnotizable, most adults fall in between. People more suggestible are also more likely to follow orders even when not hypnotized. One area readily influenced by hypnotists is motor control. Hypnosis used to break bad habits, treat anxiety, skin diseases, asthma, insomnia etc. Posthypnotic responses: people can be directed to respond after being roused from trance because of predetermined signals. A behaviour suggested while person is in trance but engages in later when specified sign is observed.
