Abnormal psychology: the scienti c study of psychological disorders. In its earliest days, mental illness was treated as a demonic possession instead of a disease. People would hide mentally ill people and care for them in isolation. A condition called general paresis became well known as a rst mental disorder. But, turns out this was a side effect of syphilis. This led to doctors being able to treat people, and linked a connection between madness and underlying sickness. Behaviours, thoughts, and emotions that differ from the typical views of a given society. Behaviours show signs of distress or unhappiness. When someone cannot take proper care of themselves, interact well with others, or work effectively, they may have dysfunction abnormal behaviour. Causing danger to themselves or other people. System used by most countries to classify psychological disorders. Diagnosis: a clinician"s determination that a clients cluster of symptoms represents a certain disorder. Usually involves impairments in personal, social, or academic functioning.
