PS102 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Insular Cortex, Striatum, Cognitive Dissonance
Document Summary
We are instrumental in shaping out own attitudes. Self-generated thought can have important impact on attitudes. Just thinking about something makes it more significant and important. This is why attituddes can change with no additional outside exposure to info. When people have moe time to think about something, they generate more attitude-consistent thoughts. Thoughts serve to polarize (make more extreme) the attitude associated with them. Clarkson argues that instead people become more confident in attitudes and thoughts as they marshal more attitude consistent thought. When we are subtly manipulated into doing or say things contrary to our attitudes, we often change attitudes to match new action or station. Doing a presentation on the opposite of what u believe, end up chaning opinion after. Festinger said when we hold 2 contradictory beliefs, we experience a state of emotional discomfort. One way to remove dissonance is to modify existing beliefs.
