PS261 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Amygdala
Document Summary
Different defensive responses occur depending on the level of danger faced by an animal. When snake appears rat"s level of danger increases, as it gets closer the level of danger rises. Most dangerous when snake close enough to strike. Different species typical defense responses occur at different levels of predatory imminence. If rat is forced to forage in location where it periodically encounters snakes, it will leave burrow rarely and eat larger meals during each excursion. Thus, response to low level of predatory imminence if adjustment in meal patterns. Rats show increased locomotor behaviour and increased preference for dark places as part of preencounter defensive behaviour. If defensive behaviour is successful and rat gets away from snake, it shifts to recuuperative responses such as grooming that promote healing from injuries. Like ssdr theory, predatory imminence hypothesis assumes defensive behaviour initially occurs as unconditioned responding.
