PS263 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Brown Adipose Tissue, Adipocyte, Allostasis
Document Summary
Homeostasis: temperature regulation and other biological processes that keep body variables. Homeostatic processes in animals trigger psychological and behavioural activities that keep within a xed range certain variables within a set range. The range is so narrow that we refer to it as a set point. Set point: a single value that the body works to maintain. Negative feedback: processes that reduce discrepancies from the set point are known as negative feedback. Something causes a disturbance, and behaviour proceeds until it relieves. However, the body doesn"t maintain complete constancy the disturbance. Ex: your body temperature is about half a celsius degree higher in mid-afternoon than in the middle of the night. Much of our behaviour anticipates a need before it occurs. Ex: a sign of danger provokes a sudden increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and sweating, preparing the body for vigorous activity. Researchers use the term allostasis to describe these dynamic changes.
