Rewards also motivate people internally or externally: social norms is when a person believes that it is in their self interest and feels that helping others is something that they have to do. Social norms prescribe proper behavior: people aid survival through kin selection, which is the idea that evolution has selected altruism towards one"s family to increase of survival of genes that are shared. Genetic self- enhancement also predicts reciprocity (helping others and expecting help in return). An example of egotism would be someone who is very self-centered and thinks about him or her before thinking about others.
