PS275 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Afterimage, Memory Span, Implicit Learning
Document Summary
Depicts info as flowing through three processing units/stores; the sensory store, short term store, and long term store. Sensory store: log in unit, holds raw sensory input like an afterimage, separate regisyers for each sense modality, hold lots of info only briefly. Short term: sensory info thats attended to, stores 5-9 pieces of info for several sections, primary or working memory. Long term: vast and relatively permanent, short term memory that is rehearsed. We"re active in our memory as we channel the input and decide whats important. Control processes/executive functions: processes involved in planning and monitoring what you attend to and what you do with this input, metacognition. Capacity is sometimes used to refer to total amount of space available, how long info can be retained, or how quickly info can be processed. Processing capacity is a fundamental predictor of performance in many cognitive tasks.
