Prejudice: attitude that judges a person on his/her group"s real or imagined characteristics. Discrimination: unfair treatment of people b/c of their group. Example: slavery caused slaves to work only to survive (minimum work) and therefore, black people are slow + unreliable: scapegoat: disadvantaged person/category of people who others blames for their own problems. Race: socially defined category of people whose perceived physical marker is socially significant. Note: physical differences do not cause behavioral differences. Ethnic group: people whose perceived cultural markers are socially significant: differ from each other by: language, custom, values, ancestors etc. Immigrant credentials were not sufficient for employers here. Note: racial inequality rooted in social structure vs. biology + culture. Symbolic interactionism, race, and ethnic realtions + opportunities. Labels and identity: social context creates racial + ethnic self-conception, example: italians didn"t consider themselves as italians but new immigrants were identified as italian = new ethnic identity ( italian canadian )
