Health: health of fit", individual is free from diseases and able to optimally live their life, optimal wellness: Safety issues with cam: do not need to be proven with the same level of evidence as modern medicine. Level i- best type of evidence- from at least one properly designed rct. Level ii- 1- evidence from well-designed controlled trials without randomizations. Level ii- 2- evidence from a well-designed cohort or case-control studies. Cohort studies are when a group of individuals are studied over time. Case-control studies are groups pf two people that are matched on certain characteristics but differ on the health characteristics of interest. Level ii- 3- evidence from multiple studies with or without intervention or uncontrolled trials. Level iii- expert opinion clinical experience, descriptive studies or expert committee reports: meta- analysis, looks at evidence from rcts and combining the results of several small studies. Allows researchers the ability to observe significant results.
