The world got more polluted so it needed to be fixed.
Environmental regulations happened.
Solid Waste Disposal Act : first federal law to regulate solid waste. Emphasis on the reduction of
solid waste volumes to protect human health and the environment. Improved waste disposal
practices. Provision of funds to improve solid waste management. Further waste reduction and
recovery.
National Environmental Policy Act : Legislation that stated the US was committed to protefting
and maintaining environmental quality. Created Council of Environmental Quality and also the
EPA. Prepared Environmental Impact Statement for any project with a significant impact on the
environment.
Marine Protection Research and Sanctuaries : Limit ocean dumping of wastes that would affect
human health or the marine environment. Regulation of runoff. Prohibition of dumping of certain
wastes. Permitting for all wastes to be dumped at sea. Prohibition of states to enact regulations
relating to marine environment.
Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide : Law was created to regulate storage and
disposal of products. Labeling requirements. Regisration and demonstration of usage
proficiency by users of products. Registrations of all pesticides with US EPA to confirm
appropriate labeling.
Clean Air Act : CAA represented the first comprehensive law that reuglated air emissions form
area, stationary and mobile sources. Established air quality standards. Developed standards for
other hazardous air pollutants. Established air quality regons in the US for regional monitoring.
Clean Water Act : Law establishes a basic structure for the regulation of the discharge of
pollutants into US Waters. Many pollutants established as hazardous wastes. Wastewater
discharge treatment requirements. Prohibition of discharge from points sources. Discharge of
dreged material only if permit is obtained.
Safe Drinking Water Act : Protects drinking water quality. Established drinking waster standards.
Protection of groundwater through regulating hazardous waste injections. Designation and

Toxic Substances Control Act : Regulate and use hazardous chemicals. Require industries to
report or test chemical sthat may pose an environmental or human health threat. Prohibition of
manufacture and import of chemicals that pose a risk. Prohibit PCBs.
RCRA : Manage and regulate both hazardous and nonhazardous wastes, esp. USTs.
Subtitle C Cradle to Grave, ensure that hazardous waste is handled safely.
Subtitle D addresses nonhazardous solid wastes exempt from Subtitle C.
Subtitle I regulates USTs to store hazardous substances or petroleum. Requirements
for maintenance.
Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments: Restrictions placed on liquid disposal. Requirements
for management and treatment of wastes. Regulations for USTs in urban areas. New standards
established for facilities. Specific requirements for treatment, storage, or disposal facilities. EPA

hazardous sites. $1.6 billion dollar fund creates from taxes levied on chemical and petroleum
industries. Hazard ranking system as well.
o 9 Existing Criteria Pertaining to Remediation Under CERCLA
o Protection of human health and environment, compliance with requirements, long term
