COMM330 Chapter Notes - Chapter p. 80-392: Social Penetration Theory, Interpersonal Communication, Social Network
Document Summary
People have strong needs for both openness and secrecy. Every interaction has the potential for raising the tension of holding both desires simultaneously. The push and pull of the forces of disclosure and privacy is evident in all types of interpersonal communication: cellphones- love that we can contact people whenever, hate that they can contact us whenever. Self-disclosure: communication is the primary vehicles for developing relationships and creating feelings of connection and closeness, self-disclosure helps people move from being strangers to being close friends or lovers. Traditionally defined as verbal communication that reveals something about a person to others. May be nonverbal (wearing crosses, particular type of scarf); discloses information about themselves and their affiliations: self-disclosure is evident in talking about where you grew up or what your major is. This is impersonal: personal self-disclosure can be seen in talking about your future hopes and childhood insecurities.
