Portugal and spain: expanding empires instead of occupying rulers. Holland had ny but emphasised trading posts instead of colonization. English won over the french and dutch b/c of permanent settlements. Acted like it was temporary, traded with latin america. While returned and they all had died. Desire to immigrate came from wanting land and higher standard of living.
