BIOL 1F25 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Metabolite, Chemical Synapse, Axon Terminal
Document Summary
Synapses: a specialized morphological structure between two synaptic partner cells. Development of the central nervous system (cns) of mammals: ~ 10,000 synapses formed in as short a time as 15 minutes. During development, it is essential that the growing axons of neurons find their way to the correct region of the brain. An axon leaving the eye has to find its way to the thalamus. Once they get to the thalamus, they have to find the region of the thalamus responsible for vision. There are numerous signals that guide this axon. Neuronal growth cone: structure at the end of the axon. During development, the growing ends of axons are called growth cones. If the cell body of a pond snail is cultured with nutrients, it regenerates in a complete growth cone. The fine, hairlike structures that sense the environment (main sensors of the growth cone)
