Most of the buildings were in wood then, which increases the dangers. 1721, big fire destroyed hotel dieu and buildings around place mont royal. Fires force government levels to create buildings code and increase security, codes are a result of an event like a fire. 1852 fire began on july 9th, near monument national, major fire 12,000 houses and buildings were destroyed, of the city was eradicated. Buildings were outside old montreal, bc those zone were populated by people coming from the country side. Came to city but built in wood bc its cheaper. As a reaction created a building code we still use today for wood buildings. Municipality after the 1852 fire, everything built inside mtl after 1852 would have to be brick or stone, but brick is faster and cheaper.
