Document Summary

Placebo effect causes people to assume that the prescription is working. During wars, when doctors would run out of morphine, they would give them an inert substance (sugar pill), and the soldiers felt better. When testing the effect of drugs, one group must be given an inert pill. One group is given a pill that does nothing, and another group is given the actual medication. See if the new drug can outperform the placebo effect. The physicians knew which one was the placebo and would act slightly different which meant the patients could guess which one they were given. Doctors in the experiments are no longer allowed to know what they give the patient in these tests. They brought in male patients with a broken leg (same type of break), excluding patients with any other medical conditions. These patients were randomly assigned into two groups: They then measured the pain scale of the men using specialized tests.
