It was a two-part system: p element that has our gene of interest and some sort of selectable marker (rosy transgene, which encodes functional rosy gene) Helper p element which cannot jump itself but encodes transposase and helps the first non-autonomous p-element jump into the genome. So we inject both plasmids into the embryo when its at the stage of one cell, many nuclei. Not all of the nuclei will get the p-element; only a few of them; not that efficient a process.
