Document Summary
Introduction to hippo anatomy and function: patient hm and declarative memory, hippo anatomy, hippo spatial memory, methods for recording neural activity in freely behaving animals, modern techniques for establishing a role of the hippo in spatial memory. Patient hm the brain that changed everything. He suffered a serious brain injury that caused him to develop severe epilepsy later in life. Neurosurgeon william scoville controversially removed the majority of his hippo in order to reduce epileptic activity/sxs bilateral medial temporal lobectomy, surgical resection of 2/3 of his hippocampi, parahippo cortices, entorhinal cortices, piriform cortices and amygdalae. The surgery fixed the epilepsy but the pt suffered from severe anterograde amnesia although his working and procedural memory were left intact. Brenda milner, doctorate student of dr. penfield at the time, was sent to test hm: he could not commit new events to his explicit memory, severe deficits. This work led to the categorisation of memory.
