Document Summary

4 elements: (1) environmental context (technology, market pressures, legal framework), (2) participants (e. g. employees, unions, management, gov"t), (3) web rules (i. e. describe how labour and management interact and resolve disagreements), & (4) ideology. Effective industrial relations system does not eliminate conflict but instead it provides rules to resolve conflict in a way that minimizes costs. Can create: an open conflict relationship where parties have extreme distrust & dislike for one another. A containment-aggression relationship where distrust remains but dislike becomes antagonism. Accommodation relationship which is more courteous but still hindered by lack of trust and acceptance of other party. Cooperative/collaboration relationship is where parties trust and accept legitimacy of each other while striving for a mutually satisfying solution to their problems. Relative bargaining power is influenced by competitive environment. Involvement of government and courts for conflict resolution is expensive and slow. Labour unions: right too strike is also a very important component of bargaining power.
