PSYCH 2C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Breaking Free, Real Face
Document Summary
Multiple theories of identity throughout the years. Draw from societal factors to shape identity tied to society not just individual. Roles: behaviours and actions that are expected of a person given their social status or position based on societal norms and values: gender roles expected of you being a girl/boy, societal expectations based on your role. Identity is not static: doesn"t remain the same throughout our lives or situations, don"t just have one identity that never changes identity is fluid and changes. Identity is situational: your identity is different for different things, teachers identity is different when in the class vs. when with friends. Identity is relational: looking glass self , define who we are with our relations and interactions with others and social world/groups. Similarity: sense of belonging in sameness, like others that are similar to us, find we belong. Difference: feeling of being unique, breaking free from status quo.
