PSYCH 2H03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Subjective Constancy, Visual Perception, Necker Cube
Document Summary
Perceiving the world: we see the world in terms of meaningful objects, visual input needs to be organized. The brain automatically integrates information about retinal image, distance, movement and other factors, giving the perception that the objects are physically constant: size constancy. As objects move closer or further away, we do not perceive them as changing in size, desire the size of the retinal image changing. Objects are perceives as the same shape when viewed from different angles, despite different retinal images of the same object: brightness constancy. Brightness of an object misperceived relative to its background. Checker shadow illusion the squares marked a & b are the shade of gray: colour constancy. Colour of an object is perceived relative to its background; we discount illumination e. g. the banana still looks yellow: perceptual organization of forms, figure/ground separation, gestalt moving principles, depth perceptions. Damage: visual agnosia: dif culty recognizing and interpret what the object is.
