Typological thinking: based on the idea that species are unchanging types and variations within species are not important or misleading. Aristotle ordered organisms that were known into linear scheme called great chain of being. Species were organized into sequence based on size and complexity, characteristics were fixed. Lamarck and the idea of evolution as change through time. Lamarck proposed formal theory of evolution species change through time. Simple organisms originate at base of chain by spontaneous generation then evolve by moving up chain over time. Species change through time via the inheritance of acquired characters. Darwin and wallace and evolution by natural selection. Evolution occurs because traits vary among individuals in a population, and because individuals with certain traits leave more offspring than others. Population: individuals of the same species living in the same area at the same time.
