He saw that the mould secreted something (penicillin) that inhibited the growth of the bacteria. 1935: gerhard domagk introduced sulfonamide drugs in germany which were efficacious against bacterial diseases that were severe. 1939-1945: during wwii florey and chain at oxford isolated penicillin for gram-positive bacteria. 1943: selman waksman at rutgers university in the us introduces streptomycin which treated tuberculosis and other gram-negative bacteria. Antibiotic: chemical substance produced by microorganisms that suppresses the growth of other organisms and may destroy them.
