Kate chopin story of an hour title - takes about an hour for events to occur, and hour for us to read. Mrs. mallard had heart trouble and great care was taken to break the news of her husband"s death. Unlike other wives, she wept once but was not in denial or paralyzed. The open window with the view of the square, blooming tree tops, birds, clouds, etc was a symbol of freedom. She saw her husband"s death as an opportunity of freedom. The possession of self-assertion was greater than the unsolved mystery, love. Her husband was not a bad husband, or abusive but he repressed her and was controlling. She envisions her future of freedom, new sense of self, enlightenment, new confidence, insight anagnorsis finds herself. She dies at the end in shock of her husband being alive, the long life she wished for and imagined was all gone.
