Instruct research staff in how to do things. Ask a project supervisor if you can work along with them. In an article, you could imitate/replicate the protocol described in the methods section. Sometimes the discussion section will have idea of where to go next in that research area. Identify relevant explanatory and response variables : exposure and outcome. In experimental studies, the research can manipulate the variables whereas observational you must leave it alone. You can randomize the people to exposures because you address the confounding effects.
