GCM 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Toner, Digital Printing, Xerography
Document Summary
There are 4 printing presses in the gcm room. The difference between the large and small offset lithography print presses is that the large press prints on bigger paper. Offset lithography produces excellent quality prints and most widely used. In offset lithography, printing plates are made of aluminum and consists of an image area (what we want to print) and non-image areas (what we don"t want to print. In offset lithography, the plates are not raised like in flexography, but the image and non-image areas are chemically different. The image areas are oleophilic- attracts oil/ oil loving and the non-image areas are hydrophilic- attracts water/ water loving. The ink used in offset lithography is thick (margarine), and not pourable. For smaller printing presses, polyester printing plates (cheaper and not light sensitive) are used (also offset plates), also contains image and non-image areas, and doesn"t have a height.
