Depressogenic cognitions (hopeless, negative view of self/world/future) Research in late 70s examines prediction that depressed people more likely to blame themselves when something goes wrong. Depressed people superior at determining extent of their roles in events. Non-depressed people engage in cognitive distortions to see self & environment in positive way. Emotional disturbance is about more than just observable symptoms. Distress is a manifestation of underlying conflicts. Mental health depends on development of personal relationships. Interpersonal problems: role dispute, role transition, skills deficits, grief.
