Document Summary

Organs of endocrine system are small and unimpressive. Functionally the endocrine organs are impressive: role in maintaining body homeostasis. Hormones are chemical substances that are secreted by endocrine cells into the extracellular fluids and regulate the metabolic activity of other cells in the body. Nearly all of them can be classified chemically as either amino acid-based molecules (ex; proteins, peptides and amines) or steroids. Steroid hormones are made from cholesterol: they include sex hormones made by the gonads and the hormones produced by the adrenal cortex. Hormones bring about their effects on the body"s cells primarily by altering cellular activity- in other words, by increasing or decreasing the rate of a normal metabolic process rather than by stimulating performance of a new one. The changes of hormone binding depend on the hormone and the target cell type but typically one or more of the following occurs: Changes in plasma membrane permeability or electrical state.
