Document Summary

Bio230 lecture 4 - tissue morphogenesis (oct 31) Go from looking at cells and tissues to looking at how multicellular organisms develop. To understand normal cell biology and disease we must understand the molecular machinery that functions inside cells to control their shapes, functions, interactions and numbers. The generation of tissue shapes that form organs and bodies. Generation of different cell types in tissues. Cell proliferation: can start with single cell, need proliferation to make all the cells. Cell specialization: one cell differentiating from others (all cells in body contain same dna = difference in gene expression in one cell type vs another) Cell interaction: physical interactions, signals to each other. Cell movement: cells can move and change their shapes. Multicellular development = making the full set of cell types, putting them in the right place, having organs create proper structures. Multicellular development is studied with a variety of model organisms. Fruit fly, nematodes, mice, xenopus, zebrafish, arabidopsis, fruit flies.
