Data exchange, just like phone, paper, email, etc. Electronic data interchange (edi) extensible markup language (xml) - type of edi. Data transport mechanism from one computer to the next. Allows data points to be automatically entered into database instead of entering each point manually. Xml statement is a combination of data and tags. Every start tag must have an exactly matching end tag. Tag name has to have meaning (not just tag" but name") Tags cannot have spaces in tag name (spaces mean something else) Only data between start and end tag. Has other data in it (simple and/or complex) Will always be Tells computer start and end of document. Can have many documents (root tags) in one file. Sometimes can be both about tag and data - then it"s up to user. Format - _attribute label= assignment ( _ means a space, not an underscore; = means assigned)
