They key focus of this class is to look at various institutions that can contribute to social inequality in society and various concepts surrounding inequality. Chapter 1 a sociological compass (p: 1 24) Society tends to focus on an individual"s state of mind rather than what factors may have lead them to become depressed/angry enough for them to commit suicide. Durkheim purposes that suicide rates are influenced by far more than just individual factors but rather social. Suggested that high solidarity groups (closer knit communities) were less likely to have suicides and vice versa. Social solidarity: the degree to which group members share beliefs and values, also factors intensity and frequency of their reaction. Altruistic: soldiers dying for their comrades. The figures suggest social solidarity is lower than it used to be in society. Social structures, relatively stable patterns of social relations: Patterns of intimate social relations, face to face social interactions.
