Document Summary
Saussure writes, the two elements of the linguistic sign are both psychological and are connected in the brain by an associative link (66). In theory all things linguistic are linked to the brain, for every word each of us has a different perception of it mentally. To say that the two elements of the linguistic sign are psychological and connected in the brain is to say that one triggers and influences the other mentally. The two elements of the linguistic sign are the signifier and signified. The linguistic sign is a link between a concept and a sound pattern and a sound pattern is the hearers psychological impression of a sound, its representation of our sensory impressions. This being said the signifier is the concept and the signified is the sound pattern or mental perception that is created and imprinted by the signifier.
