Two types of guild halls:! popular culture! aesthetics - what is beauty? culture : the total pattern of a society! humanities: works of re nement & beauty! More is known about the elite culture>better recorded! Popular cultural of the overwhelming majority of the people ! (who had less leisure time)! Few theatres -> more common in late 18th cen. Public performances, often guild halls (more space to stage performances)! gongsuo -> common trade organizations ! huiguan -> native-place association, urban centres! Both had enough space to even hold various festival performances! Festivals! eg. qingming festival-> paying respects to ancestors(sweeping of the tombs), ! burning of paper money,story telling, fortune telling! Acrobatics - martial arts! travelling puppet shows (including hand puppet theatre)! Oral storytelling gave rise to literature for the middle brow! Eg. romance of the three kingdoms (sanguo yanyi)! Romance of the three kingdoms (si da mingshu)!
