Should make us more humble about our moral beliefs & more open minded about changing them, more tolerant. Made philosophers question whether moral judgments really can be true rather than merely expressing attitudes/emotions that can"t be true. Morality & religion often held that these are intimately connected. Religion is basis of morality would collapse w/out religion. Dostoevsky on if god is dead then everything is permitted about any religion (but will focus on christianity) 1) we need rewards/punishments in afterlife can only be motivated to act rightly if we know that will benefit us in the long run.
