First piece of music we listened to in class was from the 9th century. Melisma: sing a lot of different pitches holding one syllable. First notated in the west was found in the church, most music isn"t a written art. Government was the church, the money man but literacy. Church were the only people who were literate: why, to read the bible because the christian church had a long history of a literate church practice, word was god with god. If you want to unify to collect taxes, make documents. Monochords: one chord, one string, theorizing how to create pitches. Pitches: highness and lowness of a note (1 of the two things to have for a melody) A, one vibrates twice as fast as the other (100 bps) mathematical relationship for pitch. Octave: exists in the physics of sound. Kyrie eleison, gloria in excelsis, credo, sanctus, agnus dei.
