Musical aphorism is a short and condensed work- a very compressed expression. Webern"s music: the most anti-romantic of the music written before 1950. A lot of intentional silence in webern"s music. It is chamber music, but that it not the genre. It could be a symphony (remember beethoven"s 9th has a chorus section in the last movement), but it could also be a string quartet. In free atonal music, you could use any pitch in any order in any combo. But 12-tone music has more restrictions (see previous notes). Cantatas are multi-movement works, really baroque genre, but it never dies out. In the 1950s, pierre boulez was one of the most uncompromising advocates for new music. After the first world war, there was neoclassicism. But after the second world war, there was integral serialism. Structures 1a: 1 movement work for two pianos: it is a character piece.
