Behavior genetics; researchers seek to provide answers to the nature vs nurture question. Long term research projects in which the same participants are observed or tested repeatedly are called longitudinal studies. Studies that involve observing or testing participants in different groups at one moment in time are called cross-sectional studies. Sequential studies combine the cross-sectional and the longitudinal studies. Groups composed of participants born in the same year are called cohort. In cohort design, we compare the responses of different cohorts. The union of the sperm and the ovum forms a one-celled structure called the zygote. Through mitosis (cell division), the zygote reproduces itself for nine months. From the 2-9 weeks after fertilization, the major organ systems are formed developing human called an embryo. Not all zygotes become embryos, 1/3 of zygotes are rejected by the uterus through miscarriage.
