Document Summary

Psychopharmacology is the study of the effects of drugs on the nervous system and of course, on behaviour. To be effective, a drug must reach its site of action. To do, drug molecules must enter to body into the bloodstream where they are carried to the organs on which they act. They must then leave the bloodstream and come into contact with the correct molecules: for the drugs we are interested in, this means these drugs must enter the cns. There are many barriers, and some drug molecules pass through these more easily, or less easily than others. Once at the binding site, they begin to be metabolized. The process by which drugs are absorbed, distributed within the and excreted in referred to as metabolized, body, pharmacokinetics. There are many different ways to administer drugs. The preferred route with laboratory animals is injection.
