Social influence refers to the many ways people affect one another. It involves changes in behaviour/attitures that result from comments, actions or even presence of others. There are several types of social influences: o o o. Conformity: defined as changing one"s behavior/beliefs in response to some real (or imagined) pressure from others. Compliance: defined as responding favorably to an explicit request by another person and can come from someone with power over you or from peers. Obedience: occurs when the power relationship is unequal and the more powerful person issues a demand rather than a request, to which the less powerful person submits. Is a tendency to go along with others a good thing or a bad thing? o o o. In today"s western society, which prized autonomy and uniqueness, the word conformity connotes smth negative to most people. Still other types of conformity are clearly beneficial, both to ourselves and to others.
